The latest build of ZipGenius, 6.3.2.3111, is the first brick of a bridge we are building to drive us to the next-gen ZipGenius. In brief words, there will be only ZipGenius 6.3.3 – unless we have to patch the ZipGenius 6.3.x codebase.

 We could see ZG 6.3.4 or ZG 6.3.5 and even ZG 6.3.90, if needed.

This will happen because we are not developing the 6.3.2.X version of the main application but we are finalizing its version 6.3.3 – which will fix the “Unicode Disaster”.

Just because we are looking forward to reach ZipGenius 7 in short times, we decided to change how we recognize the several ZipGenius versions.

You already know that: when we modify anything, we release a new setup package that takes its version number from the true zipgenius.exe file.

We used this paradigm to recognize versions by this way:

  • Major Version: this identifies which ZipGenius series we have.
  • Minor Version: when this number changes, it means we have deeply modified ZipGenius (new features, obsolete features removed);
  • Revision: when this changes, it means we improved an existing feature;
  • Build Number: this number changes every time we do a bugfix.

We now consider this paradigm obsolete and we’re moving to the following one.

[/wr_text][wr_image el_title=”Next ZipGenius versioning paradigm.” image_file=”https://zipgenius.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2014/07/next_versioning.png” image_size=”full” image_alt=”Next ZipGenius versioning paradigm.” link_type=”no_link” image_container_style=”no-styling” image_alignment=”center” image_margin_top=”10″ image_margin_bottom=”10″ image_effect=”no” disabled_el=”no” ][/wr_image][wr_text div_margin_top=”10″ div_margin_bottom=”10″ enable_dropcap=”no” disabled_el=”no” ]We will not use the build number publicly anymore.

We considered that ZipGenius has an ever increasing modularity and often it happens that we don’t update the main application but other parts of ZG setup – just as we did with the patch form the command line module (zg.exe).

If we don’t touch the main application, why we should show build numbers, yet? Truly useless. In fact, from now on we will identify new intermediate releases by their revision number, so the paradigm must be read by this way:

  • Major Version: a truly new ZipGenius;
  • Minor Version: features added or removed from the main application of ZipGenius;
  • Revision: something has changed in any module of ZipGenius setup, regardless if it involves the main application or not.
